Around 1950, the coffee farm belonging to Jro Dalang Gelgel was passed down to his only son, Putu Dalang.
To inherit a coffee farm meant receiving more than a piece of land and the plants growing upon it. Within that farm were the hard work of the previous generation, the hopes of the family, and the responsibility to ensure that what had been built would not simply come to an end.
Putu Dalang chose not merely to preserve the farm.
He chose to develop it.
Quality Born from Consistent Care
Putu Dalang focused his attention on improving the way the plantation was managed. The coffee plants needed better care, the harvest needed to be protected, and the land needed to be managed so that it could continue producing quality crops.
For a coffee farmer, success does not begin when the cherries are picked—it begins long before that.
Coffee plants must be cared for even when they show no immediate results. The condition of the farm must be monitored, the right time for harvesting must be determined, and when one season ends, the work does not truly stop because the next season is already waiting.
Putu Dalang understood one important principle:
Quality cannot be achieved through shortcuts. Quality is built through care, repeated time and time again.
Reinvesting What Was Harvested
From each harvest, Putu Dalang did not use everything simply for immediate needs. A portion of the earnings was reinvested to purchase more land, which was then planted with coffee and other agricultural crops.
This decision reflected a way of thinking that would later become an important part of our family’s journey:
The results of an endeavor should not only be enjoyed today, but also used to strengthen the future.
Little by little, the plantation grew in size.
Through consistent hard work, our grandfather’s coffee farm eventually became known as one of the producers of high-quality Robusta coffee in North Bali.
This reputation was not built through large-scale promotion.
It grew from the quality people could experience for themselves.
When the coffee produced was consistently good, people noticed it, talked about it, and came back for more. Trust was not built through promises, but through consistency.
During Putu Dalang’s generation, our family legacy entered an important new chapter.
What had begun with the purchase of a piece of land and the planting of coffee gradually developed into a plantation managed with a greater focus on quality.
Jro Dalang Gelgel planted the roots. Putu Dalang strengthened them—ensuring that the trees he inherited did not merely survive, but continued to grow and produce high-quality coffee that became increasingly known throughout North Bali.
